Fat Cells Don’t Stand a Chance Against CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting, if you are not familiar, is a non-invasive treatment designed to remove areas of stubborn fat on the body permanently. During a CoolSculpting procedure, fatty tissue is suctioned into an applicator that cools the fat cells. The cold temperatures numb the area being treated and freeze the cells for good. Where Does the Fat Go After a CoolSculpting Treatment?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get from patients. CoolSculpting involves no medications, needles, or cannulas, apposed to other fat removal procedures, such as Liposuction. However, one of the similarities CoolSculpting and Liposuction have in common is that the fat leaves the body for good. Because there is no incision and the whole process of CoolSculpting is done outside of the body, many individuals wonder where the fat goes.

CoolSculpting uses a freezing process called Cryoliplysis (freezing fat), which targets and kills the treated fat cells. The process of CoolSculpting targets fat without harming or freezing any of the surrounding tissue. Once the cells have died, they are processed and removed through your lymphatic system. This happens over 3-4 months, so your body is not overwhelmed with dead fat cells. 

Will the Fat Come Back?

It’s important to note that the fat cells cannot return after CoolSculpting. We are born with a finite number of fat cells. The total number of fat cells in the body remains the same from birth until adulthood. When we lose weight, the fat cells shrink, and when we gain weight, the fat cells expand; however, they do not multiply. CoolSculpting will eliminate a portion of fat cells within a targetted area, and the fat cells are permanently reduced.

There are two prominent fat reduction procedures people consider, CoolSculpting and liposuction. Both remove fat, yet they’re very different experiences.

Non-Invasive vs. Invasive

CoolSculpting and liposuction essential accomplish the same goal (to remove fat), but the journey is much different. The most significant difference being that CoolSculpting is non-invasive, while liposuction is invasive. When determining which option is best, many people consider this to be the most crucial factor.

CoolSculpting is a completely non-invasive procedure that requires no downtime. CoolSculpting utilizes freezing temperatures to eliminate unwanted pockets of fat for good. Due to the treatment being non-invasive means there is no surgery involved, so no need to worry about needles, incisions, or blood.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is invasive and requires surgery. A liposuction procedure requires a cannula (hollow tube) and aspirator (suctioning device) to suction out stubborn fat. Going under the knife means you will need several days to rest and recover.

Fat Removal

When it comes to the amount of fat that can be removed from these two procedures, they differ. CoolSculpting is best for individuals who are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight and are looking to remove stubborn pockets of fat on the body. Because CoolSculpting gets rid of less fat per treatment, patients may need more than one session to get to their ideal body.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is the more aggressive treatment out of the two; thus, a larger volume of fat can be removed in a single session. This procedure is ideal for individuals who have an excessive amount of fat on their bodies.

Risk

It may be evident that because liposuction involves surgery that it is riskier. Yes, this is true; however, that does not mean there are no risks associated with CoolSculpting. Although very little (because CoolSculpting is non-invasive and nonsurgical), some patients may experience minimal side effects, such as some bruising or stinging on the treatment area.

Comparatively, liposuction has many more risks associated with it. Liposuction requires going under anesthesia, and with this comes potential health risks. Like any other surgery, there is always a risk of bleeding and infection. After the surgery, patients may experience severe bruising and inflammation (that can sometimes take months to settle).
